No NZ Post Economy Option

Does anyone know if we’re able to send small boxes via Economy post or is their Rate Finder broken?

Previously i was able to send boxes bigger than the size of a shoe box from Wellington to Auckland for around $9.20 via Economy. Now when i go into the rate finder on their site, it only gives me the Courier options.
Next to Economy it says ‘Unavailable for parcels of this size’.
I’ve played around with the dimensions and even a box thats 8cm x 10cm x 10cm is unavailable to be sent via Economy but if i drop it to 7cm x 10cm x 10cm then this works and quotes at $4.20 economy rate.
The weight and value is set to the lowest on all occasions.
Any ideas on if they’ve changed their policy/criteria for Economy post?
Thanks

  • I just tried it through Trade Me's 'Book a Courier' service and I could send a 8x10x10 (0-3kg) parcel from Dunedin to Auckland via economy with NZ Post (though Fastway/Aramex were cheaper)

I don't know if their prices are different to doing it through the NZ Post site but try using them for a quote, the item you're sending doesn't need to have been bought or sold through Trade Me.

The economy service for large parcels (thicker than 70mm) was stopped a couple of months ago. The prices for courier were dropped to make up for this,
So in your example, it was $9.20 economy or $16 courier, whereas now it is $11.20 for the same courier option.

Thanks for this info! Clarifies everything. I couldnt see any reference to a 70mm thickness limit on their website

  • Maybe the website is broken again, so perhaps try again later. I know now they removed Economy and replace it with a slightly more expensive Tracked option, but should be cheaper than Courier. Tracked is a better option in Auckland because I know people who had their parcels stolen.

    • Completely agree with this - when selling on TradeMe, I never send anything without it requiring a signature.

      • Received a parcel from a well known retailer recent. It was signature required due to its value. Courier signs for it using MY name and left it sitting by the door in full view of the street just 10 metres away. $600 item. Luckily the Mrs went home at lunchtime to grab it, ( if it was still there). Courier got a rocket from NZ Post. The boss lady said had it gone missing that courier would have to pay for it ! Signature required does NOT mean to me that the courier signs for it in the recipients name !! That's fraud.

        Happens far too often.

It does mean that, as the seller, you are more covered than if you don't get it 'Signature Required', but you are right, not perfect.

I had one last year where a package was signed for, and the recipient said they never got it. I said, okay, I will report it stolen to the police (I wasn't about to refund them!) Magically they 'found' it later that day.

Its just about reducing your exposure, but you can never be 100% covered if you send via courier. Ideally, I do 'cash' on collection.

  • Pretty sure that the Economy option is only for inter-island freight now - well for CourierPost anyway.

    • Yeap they have a new Economy Courier which isn't worth it for anything other than island to island. $17 per 5kg,
Target of 3 days nstead of target overnight
