Honey - Chrome App

I see lots of Youtubers etc promoting this Chrome app to automatically get promo codes etc - and all the demo's look amazing of course and I have tried it in the past - but it didnt seem to do anything much in this part of the world.

Anyone have any success stories worth sharing? I assume its constantly tracking you etc so thats the benefit for them and I would rather they didnt but I might if it was any good - anyone found it worth having installed?

I've got it installed for over half year now, it's probably not worth the hype for this part of the world, not much deal through it at all unless you constantly buy stuff from US.

  • I have the RetailMeNot one, but I don't think that's tailored locally either. Edge in-built is good as well even though I don't think I have saved anything from those.

I used to use Honey way back before it was bought out. Very rarely did it have a code for anything NZ. But for bigger global brands like some hotel sites (booking/hotels etc), I used to get some discount codes sometimes. But you gotta be 110% alert and compare prices via other methods. Oftern these "discounts" from x site/extension is fake. Pricing on many hotel sites are very flexible.
E.G. find x hotel on Google Maps, click on the price listed and get $130, vs go to the site via Honey and all of a sudden the same place on the same site is $150, with maybe a small Honey discount, or code.

So be careful. Always open an incognito window to test prices directly or via other refers and pick the cheapest. (try not to just copy URLs, sometimes it'll carry over the price).

Personally, I've recently had the most luck with cashrewards.com.au here in NZ. They pretty consistently track the purchase and show the cashback you'll get within hours. Though milage will vary greatly on what sites you purchase from here.
You may have better local options with kiwiwallet.co.nz shoprewards.co.nz (though I've not had much luck with them tracking my purchases yet).

Also, often overlooked, if you have an AirNZ/airpoints account it's worth trying airnewzealand.co.nz/airpoints-mall/ not the best rates, but it's better then nothing.

Lastly, if you do want to use a Chrome extension like Honey, I'd recommend installing Extensity, it make it easy to quickly enable/disable extensions, so they don't run on every site you visit and track you.
