  • I'm not too sure about this one.

I had a look at other retailers using Consumer Powerswitch and Powershop came up with an estimated $1,621/year (inc $150 signup) compared to the best rate of $1,490/yr with Flick Electric Co. Those results are for Auckland.

    • One thing to note with Flick is that you are basically "buying" your electricity at spot prices, so it's similar to buying shares, if you can work it to buy/use it when it's low, then you will win, if not, you won't be much, if any, better off.

That's how I understand it anyway, someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

      • Don't know about Flick but I'm on Powershop and you essentially pre-purchase units which fluctuate depending on the time of the year. They also have packs which you can bulk buy to save the price rises. Sounds like a similar system.

        • Na, as I understand it, Flick is even more micromanaged than that, you pretty much pay live market rates as you use the power, and pay them a monthly fee for providing it, rather than a flat or pre arranged rate, it all depends on the time, conditions, etc.

    • I switched to Flick from Powershop 2 months ago.
Comparing the rates, I was paying around 30cents/unit with Powershop and with Flick 22-24 cents/unit. These rates are during last few months, when Powershop price is little higher in winter. I also read that Flick price is less in winter than summer (which is the other way around Powershop).

With Powershop I can pay using credit card and their mobile app is also cool. Flick charges extra for paying with credit card.

  • I've been with Flick about 5 months. I get about the same average as Shami 20c vs 30+ with Powershop. There are times I'm paying more in the moment, but most of the day I'm paying much less using the spot prices. They were running a $75 credit a couple months back for new signups, which made it even sweeter. I wonder if you could keep changing back and forth every few months to whichever no contract supplier is having the best promotion? I would be a hassle but might be worth it. Changing is relatively easy and it's not like ISPs where you can be out for a few days without service during a switch.
