Cheap mobile data plan for 4G unlimited

so my family caught covid and im staying at my nanas but for 2 or 3hrs a day i sit in my car and use the internet then go back to my nanas house its quite boring at night so looking for

the best mobile internet plan best i could see was $20nzd for 7days you get 10gb after that it caps the speed to 1.2mbps = 150kbps according to this site https://www.gbmb.org/mbps-to-kbs for 7days then you need to renew it im just waiting for the sim card to come in the post

would anybody know of a better plan because 10gb is not enough i feel like i would use that in a couple of hrs

i don't want to be on a 12 month plan as i think i will be at my nanas house for only maybe another 1/2 weeks according to what the 2 doctors have told my family and i still come home to use the internet during the day anyway

also the main things i want to be able to do is play fortnite and maybe use facebook a bit but i think 1.2mbps will be too slow

just at night sitting around having nothing to do is making me a bit depressed at times

    Baseline comment; $25 a month for 15gb from Kogan via UNiDAYS

    Code: KNUNIDAYS

    • i cant find this plan also how long would it take to get the sim delivered and is it 15gb then that's all or does it cap the speed after 15gb is used and if it does how slow will it be

        Here's the link to the UniDays plan mentioned by Wakrak

        t's capped at 15GB of data.
        After that if you need more then you have to buy it - unfortunately not cheap. Here's your Kogan data ad-on pricing

        You might be cheaper with the $5 starter pack from Kogan.
        Only good for 30 days but if it's just data you are after then you could buy multiple sims.

        Problem with Kogan can be the length of time it takes to get the SIM. I've got mine in just a few days in the past but I know others have waited weeks and the customer service is not very responsive.

      On another note, is this $25 for the first month, $35 ongoing or $25 every month? I couldn’t tell by the wording :-)
      Thx

        I believe the first month only at $25.
        From the link it states:

        That's right, students can benefit from 15GB of data for $25 for the first 30 days with unlimited standard calls & text to use within New Zealand.

        After that $35 ongoing for the 15GB plan I would say.
        You’re right though - really hard to find a categorical answer on the Kogan site.

    This is a serious comment, and I'm not trying to be facetious, but if you are having problems with boredom and depression may I suggest that filling your time with more internet consumption may not actually help. Perhaps your problem is actually boredom and depression rather than how to get the best deal on unlimited internet.

    If my hunch is right, perhaps consider what might help you overcome this. Have you considered exercise? Say a bike ride, walk around a local park or beach, swimming etc?

    There was a free trial of a meditation app here a while ago that is quite good, perhaps consider it during your down time.

    If I've misread it, and you really do just need good internet, I think you've got a fairly good deal. Either that or just pay your gran to upgrade her plan for the month to unlimited - might actually work out cheaper. Just don't forget to change her back when you're done or it may come out of your inheritance ;)

    Buy a $55 monthly prepay 2degrees SIM card from Noel Leeming for $28 (or $27.34 with CSC membership). It will come with 10GB a month. If you have a number with a different network, port to 2degrees for 7.5GB bonus. Then you'll also have 2 free hours of data each day until 31 March. So for $28 you'll get 17.5GB + 2 hours each day.

  • Read a book

  • 1.2mbps is not 150kbps. Actually there's no such thing as mbps. The CAPS are important… M = mega, k = kilo, B = bytes, b = bits. There are 8 bits in a byte.

    The speeds are 1.2Mbps which is 1200 kbps and that is 150 kB/s (kBps). That's enough to stream most videos at 720p. I just pulled a random youtube video manifest and the corresponding bit rates (note that's kbps not kB/s):

    240p = 168kbps
    360p = 298kbps
    480p = 480kbps
    720p = 922kbps
    1080p = 2161kbps

    • so with this speed i should be able to watch 144p youtube fine?

      and maybe go on facebook with images in the browser turned off?

    Have you considered 2talk for data only? Its $15 Ex. GST /mth for unlimited at up to 1Mbps which is pretty slow for today's standards (https://www.2talk.co.nz/pricing#mobile). Note I'm currently using 2talk for their VOIP service but not their mobile service so I don't know the quality of what their mobile service is like. Their sim is $3 couriered last I checked.

    • from doing a google search i found most people saying 3mbps is the minimum speed people should get that can download at least 1gb of data an hour

      it just sucks there is no unlimited plans that cap at that speed

    • The minimum price I see for mobile on that page is $25 ex GST. Do you have a discount code or are you with them for broadband and you see a lower price or something?

        Click "See All Plans" and it should bring up two columns with "Data Only"

        • Thanks! Could have sworn I clicked that but I must have not. I agree it would be great if it was 3mbps as 1mbps is a bit too slow for modern browsing.

    Kogan was cheapest when they had the deal

  • ok update so my nana was telling me the day i came to her house my aunty called her and said a box was coming in a couple of day for the phone from spark (im guessing its a router) and to keep and eye out for it but she said she talked to aunty last night and told me she said a box should arrive tomorrow and and she said my aunty said something about 40gb but she said i know nothing about it i had no idea what she was going on about

    package turned up today but she wont let me open it to see what it is and she wants me to first talk to my aunty

    when i told her its most likely for the internet she just gets annoyed and say im not paying for the internet just the phone line this thing has nothing to do with the internet she says they are replacing the copper wire and i need this box

    but they already did that when my cousin was staying with her for 2 months my aunty internet for her to use while there

    so if my aunty did setup a 40gb plan what plan would it be and would the speeds be capped after 40gb is used???

      Most likely your nana got the $45/mth Spark Wireless landline service and also comes included 40GB broadband data at no extra cost. Data is capped and additional data can be purchased at $10 for 10GB up to 6 packs 😎
