Saw the email promotion. Just wondering if there’s anything good out there? Could be useful for others. Please leave the name of the stores also. Thanks:)

Mitre10 is never on my radar for good bargains, I'm under the impression that they are very overpriced, even items on clearance are overpriced. I only go in there for price match…haha

    • Can’t argue with that!

    • I have found that as well although their price beat is significantly more useful than bunnings as they sell products that are actually sold elsewhere as well, whereas bunnings have a lot of their SKUs changed so you can't price beat.

    • From my experience they often bring in lower priced products like medalist which they sell at a low price to get people int eh doors. Sometimes there are ok stuff. . We only have mitre 10 in my area and no bunnings (it is 2 hours drive away),. But Mitre 10 prices are almost always a few cents higher for what I buy, so I also get 15% off bunnings prices. But IMO we really need a third big player, as it seems like a duopoly like supermarkets, and NZ building products like NZ food is expensive compared to most countries.

      • Placemakers and Carters are pretty big too?

We have all of them within about 5km, but in Auckland, so a more efficient market perhaps.

        • Yes but placemakers and carters are more trades-focused while m10 and Bunnings are more like homeowners-focused. Just have a look around what are shoppers at each store be like

          • @Biker: You can certainly walk in to Placemakers and they will happily assist / serve you, and they market to consumers as well as trade.

Haven't been to Carter's for maybe twenty years, so you might well be right about them.

          • @Biker: I understand both are owned by the two big material companies. eg Placemakers is owned by Fletchers and Carters is owned by CHH. Both are more targeted towards tradies, and tradies don't tend to care what they pay because they just on bill it to the customer with a margin. My local one is only open till 4:30pm and not the weekends and it is more of a trade store. Bunnings do also have a few 'trade' stores, more focused towards tradies. They converted the NaeNae one to a trade store.

            • @nzmax: Placemakers gives out freebies to their best trade customers (e.g. free rugby tickets) so as to keep their business, with the items being billable to the end customer. Their stores are like ghost towns compared to Bunnings.

Most of the clearance items at Auckland stores look shop soiled. Or possibly customer returned items too, so customer soiled ick.

  • Late to the party I know - but if you are in CHCH the Ferrymead Store has some quite cool giftware (not found at other stores) for 25% off during this promotion (including off clearance). Furniture, ornaments, boxes, trinkets, and stuff like that. Some cool stuff (though not quite enough for me to remember until now).
