Recommendation on the best value prepay mobile plan

Hi there, I have been on the cheapest monthly plan with 2 degree for long time. It used to be $30 per month and I have got 20% discount so $24 per month. They have recently increase the price so now I'm paying$28 per month. Just thought this is too much now as I never used up the carry forward data plan.

Could you guys recommend any good plan? I'm not tied with any plan so I can switch to another company easily.

Thanks in advance.

Kogan, especially during their 50% off or BOGOF deals.

There is no such thing as a ‘good plan’.
It depends on how much data you need, voice minutes, txt etc.
Do you use add-ons like Spotify, network coverage for your location.

Let us know what you require and it will be easier to recommend a plan.

    • Thanks, I don't use Spotify or any other add ons. Just regular data plan enough for a 20 mins train ride on a daily basis (just FB scroll or just reading news), using less now as we are WFH more nowadays. Don't call much as well too

How many texts do you send, how many phone calls do you make, how often do you call voicemail, how much data do you use, how much of that is for social media, how much do you want to spend?

I've found skinny $16 plan suits me well, rollover data is nice.

        @Juju123

I second the Skinny $16 plan listed in the comment by @bigcheese below, been on it myself for a few years now and couldn't fault it. And this was WAY before the recently (Aug 2021) announced 8GB "Bring Your Number" free bonus data (you have 12 months from sign up to use it all). So you essentially start out with whopping 9.25GB to use! You also get unlimited minutes for Skinny to Skinny numbers, and unlimited texts to NZ & AU.

We've also been enjoying "Free Endless Data Weekends" from Nov2021-Mar2022 (and also previous summer 2020/2021). This is 2GB of free max speed data every weekend starting 5pm Friday and once that is used up you go down to a reduced speed unlimited free data (which for your usage should still be more than enough) before you go back onto your personal data usage 12.00am Monday. I'd also like to mention the Skinny app is just so easy to use, so well designed and user friendly. Easy navigation and top up, and you can see all your calls/texts/data usage clearly displayed on the front page. Happy customer here.

I would personally not choose Vodafone (for your primary phone) because the last time I used their app/website back in 2020 (was helping my Dad with his top up and usage tracking) it was just so damn awful. Never been with Kogan so can't speak on that.

There are a few options you could use.

Kogan Small Plan - $15 per 30 days or $160 for 365 days.
The 365 day plan needs to be paid upfront but you get 1.5Gb of data, unlimited calls and texts using Vodafone network.
No specials currently running on this but they do from time to time.
Could try it out with the $5 starter pack for 30 days with 15Gb of data

    Vodafone MyFlex Prepay
For $14 you could get 1Gb of data, 100 minutes and 100 txts.
Bonus is you will also get access to Market+ membership (free shipping over $45) with The Market if you had a need for that.

Skinny $16 plan (4 weekly) using Sparks network.
Gives 1.25Gb of rollover data, 200 rollover minutes and unlimited txt.
You get 8Gb of data as a sign on incentive too

This is probably not for you since you are using data daily, but if you want "pay as you go", ie. no plans at all, Warehouse Mobile is probably the cheapest. $5 can last me 1-2 months, sometimes I still have some balance at the end of the 90 days limit…haha

I have all my family members switched to WHM too, we can then text and call each other anytime for free. With that, I got rid of the landlines, and save on that too.

      Good point.
I forgot to even include Warehouse Mobile in my list above.
What's more you even get $5 credit included on a new sim.
For $8 you could also buy a 30 day 1.25Gb data pack.

I bought the Kogan 15gb per gb data plan per month for $160 for the year. Unlimited calls and texts to NZ and AU.

Annual upfront but I dont think it can be beat with that much data and calls for $13.33 a month.

My employer gives me $150 a month to reimburse us for paying our own plans which seems a bit overkill but I'm not mentioningit to them.

    • What company is that /job if u don't mind me asking

Just be aware that, with Kogan, you might not be able to receive SMS from some 'short code' services (such as the ones that banks use).

    Alan.

    • That is quite annoying/deal killer !

      • Ive been on Kogan for over two years and I can definitely receive the texts, but I can't reply to them (texts from short numbers)

        • +1

Apologies - That is what I should have said.

The issue arises if you need to reply to confirm an appointment (for example).

          My bad!

          Alan.

          • +1

@Alan6984: It is a pain having to call to confirm appointments, but the savings make it worth it! (And having tonnes of data so no worries about using it all)

            • @EPA: I moved from Kogan to Skinny as the deal was very similar (1.25GB of data every 28 days so 16.25GB pa or roughly 1.35GB pm) and I have been able to get half price Skinny re-charge cards on promotions so it halves the cost from $16 per 28 days to $8 per 28 days (so far at least).

Skinny are also (currently) doing 2GB free data every weekend (1700hrs on Fri to maybe Sunday evening - not sure), and they do the carry-over thing (I am guessing for 12 months - haven't checked).

They also keep giving me bonus data so my data carry-over is actually just going up and up.

              Alan.

              • +1

@Alan6984: I use lots and lots of data, so for me 1.25gb isn't enough! I got the large Kogan 15gb per month plan half price, so for $15 a month and it's great for me.

                • @EPA: Fair enough - that's why there is no single 'best deal' - it has to depend on your usage pattern.

              • @Alan6984: Been on Skinny since few years now and very happy in terms of pricing. Last year's $20 skinny recharge deal from countdown was great to get half price. I think I bought like 10 vouchers which was kind of good for a year now between me & wife.

Are you having any other re-charge promotions to score that $8 per 28 days?

Best part for me with skinny is that you can go on higher data plan for a month in case you run out of data. Secondly, everyone I know is on skinny so calling is basically free.

                • @ace310: No - I was referring to the half-price recharge cards from last year (taking the $16 down to $8). I also bought quite a few :-)

I have no idea what networks most people I know are on - I hardly ever get near the calls or sms limits, so for me it is only really data and dollars that differentiates the plans now.

I think its because there are different types. The free ones (which are not free just the company is paying to recieve them - so its free for you) and the ones where the company is not paying to receive it.

The free ones work fine, its the ones that cost that are the issue - as you need credit to do so. I had the same issue with Skinny as I never had any credit just paid for my plan each month with nothing extra.

      From the web:

      Types of Short codes

Standard short codes – Also known as the 20c MO code, which implies that the handset will be charged 20c to send a message to the shortcode
Zero-rated short codes - Where our customers ensure handsets are never charged for messages to their contact base, and they pay for any charges
Premium short codes – Any shortcode that charges the handset above 20c, this could range from 30c to $8 per SMS

      • +2

I never figured out how to tell if a short code was free to text or not, I tried to look up the numbers but the info is old and few and far between. Always annoyed me when they text reply yes to confirm and charge me 20c.

        • Get a Kogan account by the sounds :) - when it doesnt work you will know its a paid one .

          • @Meridian: Yeah, that's what I have now, although sometimes when I want to pay to send and I can't it becomes a pain.

Recently I had to use prepaid for a month and I found the Spark $29 prepaid plan to be best for me as I mostly use lots of data. It has 2GB plus 2GB socialiser (for FB, Instagram, social media only), and currently there's a 2 GB bonus (think it's just for summer)).

  • +1

Spark with their data stack and u25 deal if that applies to you

  • +1

++1 for Kogan. We'd been with 2 Degrees for 20+ years, $20 a month for 1.5GB data per month. Kogan offering unlimited text and calls + 15GB monthly data for around $13 a month.
Approached 2 Degrees asked if they wanted to do a better deal, they were beyond disinterested, told me take a hike. So we did. No regrets, better service from Kogan and data to burn.

    • I have found kogan to not have particularly good service. They take longer than appreciated in the live chat

    • That's basically the case for everything…haha, power companies, broadband companies, even employers. Simply "take a hike" if you find better options/opportunities, there's no need to negotiate.
