Best Jump Starter Cables to Buy under $80?

Looking for reliable ones that can just sit in the boot with no issues.

Also please recommend some stuff you have in your boot for emergencies. Currently, I have a small first aid kit and I am planning to buy a torch.

    In the boot:

    • Spare tyre along with jack etc

    • Shopping bags

    • Waterproof jacket

    • Umbrella

    • Caps / Sunscreen

    In the front:

    • Small tool that will cut a seat-belt and make it easy to smash a window.

    • Pad of paper and pencils (in case of crash for recording details).

    • Few dollars of small change for parking (although often you have to do it online now).

    • Mints / chewing gum (in case of a meeting after a spicy lunch!)

    • Power pack (I leave it charging - probably not good for extending its life, but they are cheap now)

    • Face masks (at least two in case of elastic snapping)

    • Travel Tissues

    • D-Shackle things for trailers (if you have a tow-bar else probably not so useful!)

Probably more if I rummaged around!

They now sell power banks that can jump start cars. Not so great if left in the boot for months, but if you intend to carry a power bank for your smartphone in the car, then might be worth considering. Not cheap tho RRP$100

    • thats a long list! thanks so much. definitely gave me ideas on what else i need for emergencies.

where did you buy the seatbelt cutter/ window smash tool?

      • Sorry, but I don't know - it was a gift.

maybe consider a jumpstarter rather than cables, for that price there are plenty of great options. They are a lot more convenient.

    • would you recommend any brand or models please?

ive looked at the powerbank sized jump starters but not sure what theyre like

      • I got a similar one to this from 1-day
        https://1-day.co.nz/products/autotorq-12000mah-jump-starter-…
It has been sold for $99 before and I think I brought the older version for around the $100+ mark.

It's been really good. Held its charge well. Even saved a few people in car parks with it. So much easier than getting a car close to the other car.

I've also jump started my neighbors tipper truck, no issues.

Each jump start uses about 8%-14% per jump.
It's 4 years old now and lives in the car.

Only thing that's failing is the screen can be a bit hard to read sometimes

      • hey, sorry for the late reply, did you get sorted yet?

These things are hard to recommend, the brandless ones can be a bit dodgy and some of the mah ratings are questionable. The more reputable ones are often overpriced with the same quality. They work really well. They are all very similar, usb, flashlight etc, build quality and reliability are the differentiators. I use one given to me by a friend, she bought some nice ones with her from overseas. She still has a few more that I've been meaning to help her list on TradeMe.

  • We have an emergency kit in the boot of both cars. It has a range of items that have, over the years, proven invaluable. The contents change from time to time and depending on kids & ages, but here's an idea of the sort of things that have come in handy at least once:

    • first aid kit (including spare sanitiser, scissors, asthma inhaler, antihistamine, etc)
    • deodorant
    • torch (one with a magnet can be more useful)
    • towel and change of clothes
    • spare plastic bags
    • spare nappies/change of clothes for the infants/toddlers
    • tube of sunscreen
    • rope and/or ratchet straps
    • tow rope
    • small tool kit

Other things we keep in the car at various times:

    • plastic cutlery and spare cups for impromptu takeaways
    • lightweight pop up shade tent over summer for the kids at the beach
    • picnic mat

I agree that a jump starter is more useful than jumper leads, and probably not much more expensive than a good set! You usually get a light, USB port for charging, some come with air compressor etc.

Yes, it's a good thing, I have one. It does its job just fine.

    • agreed! had my set for years and they've been fine.

    • these for sure. have a set in both mine and my wife's car,
have used it more jump starting others than myself.
      also carry
      -power bank jump starter
      -Torch
      -tyre repair kit
-air pump (Car doesn't have a spare and the person who I purchased from put on standard tyres instead of Runflat)
      -Small fire extinguisher
-high vis vest (free via cheapies a few years ago)
      -basic tool kit
      -shopping bags

      • do you have any recommendations for the power bank jump starter? I didnt even know they existed until now
