Any Tips or Recommendations for Fun Things to Do Camping

Me and wife are going on a almost month long camping+Airbnb trip of south Island. Pretty sure I have accumulated a lot of stuff over the years but always looking for ideas!

My triple burner Gas mate camp stove finally died but I might just replace it with a cheap Bunnings butane canister one for space saving and ease of use.

We've got an inflatable kayak 2 person one for occasional fun on no windy lakes.
Car is a Ute with big tray so storage isn't an issue.

The cheap Bunnings stoves are ok, but the canisters don't last long. You'll probably need to account for replacing it daily or every two days, which adds up to a lot of canisters and a lot of waste over the month, maybe look for a second hand cooker with a small refillable tank?

Make a bucket list of, say, 50 things to do before the trip ends: it will give you some daily excitement in what could become a tiring journey. Stuff like:

    • Watch the sun rise on an east coast beach and the sun set on a west coast beach in one day
    • Find and eat a fruit that you've never eaten before
    • Help someone in need (hitchhiker, help change a flat tire, etc)
    • Eat a Bluff oyster in Bluff
    • Travel to the southernmost tip of the South Island (hint: it's not near Bluff)
    • etc…

If you want to try this maybe other Cheapies can pitch in with ideas!

    • This sounds great! Especially weather reliant these little bucket list items could make it more exciting for sure. More ideas welcome!

In terms of gear, I like a lot of the collapsible stuff Torpedo7 sell. Even cheaper with the HNZ code. The Sea to Summit range is great. We have a little backpack in the car with plates, cups, cutlery, towels, bucket, table, headtorch, sunblock and first aid kit.

A lot of great walks to do down south. I've only done a couple around the Central Otago area. Roys Peak is a beauty.

    • Awesome, we have a shopping cart already going with Torpedo7 so will add some of that as well. What kind of table did you fit into a little backpack? Very curious because that list sounds perfect for day trips from the camping locations.
Roys Peak is definitely on the list although depending on the fatigue at the time. 2nd half of the trip will definitely be a chill-relaxing-soak in nature-internet detox kinda trip before getting back into the office and grind!

Okay I half-lie about the table fitting 😄 but I do attach it to the bag since it comes in its own carry case. Here's some of the stuff I have T7 wise.

        camp chair link
        sea to summit kitchen

Send me a message if you don't have the HNZ code.

        • Thanks heaps mate, that just gave me more ideas! We have a higher table/sitting desk combo from Kathmandu but this one is much smaller so will go take a look.

Oh, and can I be the first to say I really envy you. I'd love to take the wife on a month long trip around the country like that. Enjoy!

    • Haha its been a long time planning my friend. Wifey isn't too much into camping but loves the nature as well so we have had to strike a compromise where we stay at some nice places(airbnbs, hotels etc) every 2 or 3 days of camping :D
