American Express Spend $10 and Receive $5 Credit Promotion

For American Express cardholders in Auckland and Waikato, where do you spend your money to get $5 back when most retailers are closed in level 3?

So far I have only spent in buying St Pierres sushi, icebreaker (before lockdown), and one supplement company I buy lots of products from.

Any suggestions please?

Check the "Online" button on the map and I'll tell you which online stores it can be used on.

    • Thanks, forgotten about the website.

    • sadly many of the retailers listed under 'online' actually don't allow or trigger the $5 credit.

Burger Fuel, Atomic Cafe, and Sals Pizza online don't accept Amex.

I made a purchase on Trademe this week and paid by their Ping, an email arrived shortly after saying I have earned a $5 credit so not sure if its was an error or Trademe Ping is also in the promo.

Below is a PDF list which could be outdated. For reference only.

    • The last time they did this I got one from an instore purchase from Countdown, only once. It must be a manual process.

    • Interesting. I bought two things on TM last year during the $5 back on $10 promotion, and they also had the get $10 back on $20 on Ping. Ended up getting two lots of $15 credit back. So I think in your case, it would be the retailer, not ping. Thanks

I just got $5 paid back from a $14 Ping purchase on Trademe (from a private seller) so it seems like Ping is included.

I have now received 2 x Trademe Ping credit ($5 each) in my statement for purchases. It's labelled as "TRADE ME PING"

Great. Thank you for updating. My bad for assuming it was from the retailer before. Time to shop on trademe.

    • Interesting. Last year when they had this promo with the get $10 back on $20 spent on Ping promo, Trade Me account balance updates were marked as "TRADE ME PING". Now it seems adding to your account balance is marked as "TRADE ME" which no longer seems to trigger for this campaign.

      • Yeah only purchases triggered credits for me. Top ups and courier bookings does not trigger any credits.

I ordered pizza from Hell Pizza. Free delivery (min spend $25) on Tuesdays too!

Thanks for this. Placed two orders using the Halloween discount code plus $5 x 2 back promotion made it a very cheap lunch today.

Gateau House, Hell Pizza, St Pierres, KK Malaysian. A lot of the food spots listed in the 'available online' section on https://amexshopsmallmap.co.nz/apps/store-locator are complete lies, either the online payment portal doesn't accept Amex or it gets routed through the portal (e.g. Mobi2Go, Stripe) and you don't get the $5 credit.

I've called and emailed Amex about this but their response is that "it's a rare situation where I find that I can't use this promo online as specified on their website"

    • Hell pizza? I just ordered from botany last weekend without problem. Which branch did you try to order from? St Pierres Manukau accepts Amex. I think after covid, more and more retailers just can't afford to accept Amex. That's why I struggle to find places to use this promotion.

Sorry the ones I listed are all good with this promo.

It's the likes of ones like Sals, Burger Fuel, and Atomic Cafe (just to name a few) that accept Amex when you go to the physical store but don't online.

That's what baffles me. Your physical store is already taking the hit for the fee but you don't extend this capability to your online platforms?

        • the ownership of the stores and corporate are different.
probably a good number of stores somewhere who do not want the higher fees.

          • @huffboy: Yeah most likely the case. Though I'd have expected then for physical stores to not accept Amex (due to high fees and franchisees opting out) but online to accept (corporate controlled and having a wider audience than each physical store)

        • Got you! Thanks for the heads up with the online ones.
