Electricity company - cheapest

I switched to electric kiwi and we have the free hour of power. Been with them for a year. Was just wondering who everyone is with? Family of 6. I’m a stay at home Mum so we use power all day every day. Just thought I’d see who is the cheapest these days. Thanks

electric kiwi is on a rampage raising prices. twice this year so far.

    • Inflation. Are others doing the same thing?

I'm with electric kiwi but would be interested to know how they now compare.

The electric kiwi price changes were pretty much across all retailers from what I read? Don't forget that depending where you live some actually got a reduction with the first round. Electricity prices are so simple to compare. You've got your usage data and your rate per hour. A very simple calculation to see if you can do better. It is slightly complicated by the free hour of power of course at EK.

We're with PowerShop currently … they guarantee $150 cheaper than your previous power company over 12 months. So we keep going back to them every couple of years to maximise our discounts! They have a nice referral program too.

  • We've found Contact good, and cheap for broadband, and a good referral program ($100, no contract)

Couldn't agree more, $100 signup bonus, no contract, fixed rates, and the rates worked out to be ~20% cheaper than electric kiwi (before hour of power) which was the 2nd cheapest fixed rate electricity company for my house.
However, they just recently got rated worst electricity provider by consumer NZ. I don't really know what that means, but they've been great to deal with personally!

However, take this with a grain of salt as electricity company prices vary from address to address and what's cheapest for me may not be cheapest for you :)

      • Just to clarify: You got a $100 sign-up bonus and didn't have to sign up for any fixed period?

        • Correct, I think it's 40 days you have to stay on (connection period bill then applied to the full payment period bill) to recieve it

I have received two further $100 off from cheapies customers using my referral which is applied after they have stayed with connect for 40 days, I would add mine here, but that isn't allowed on cheapies, and there should be a random referral box somewhere on the site :)

So if you have a friend on connect energy, that's $100 for you and $100 for them :)

          • @Rowjo: Cool - thanks!

            • @Alan6984: I just read the comment below by sunshinenz which is worth the read if you are considering moving to contact :)

  • Power prices can vary significant across the country - even across town in some cases. You really need to do your own research if you want to know the cheapest for you.

Personally I'm with Nova because they had the best base rates and promo credit for me. However, they've since stopped selling power or gas without bundled internet, so I wouldn't recommend them for any new customers until they cut that out.

    • This is exactly why I just switched away from Nova. Went from no-surcharge for paying by Credit Card, to a 1% surcharge.

As an EV owner, I'd prefer a fixed, "anytime" rate, and preferably, no contract unless it is fixing super low rates. I also don't want any forced bundle shit, and would prefer a supplier that did Gas as well.

Turns out, the company that fits that bill is Energy Online. After comparing a lot of providers (including Ecotricity who no longer do an anytime rate), Energy Online came out to be the best value when taking Electricity + Gas.

To get the most out of Contact: sign up via referal, get $100. After the $100 credit has been applied sign up for a 2-year contract "every day bonus fixed" using code "100promo", will get $150+$100 from that. So total $350 credit. Power prices are projected to increase substantially, so it would be quite beneficial to fix now.

Beware, Contact customer service is hit and miss. Electric Kiwi is much better in that regard.

  • I'm with Contact, it's way cheaper than the previous provider, Mercury. I don't really care much about the customer service, I don't need to contact power company.

  • For Contact Energy, use code 200OFF for $200 credit into your account :)

    • Is this for existing customers?

We’re with Powershop, my husband buys packs in advance for cheaper and we have off peak times for the car charging/dishwasher/washing machine etc. no one has been cheaper for us!

  • I'm waiting for the next opportunity to join Contact on "no fixed term" and get the highest joining credit.
Then switch to their 3 free hours plan.

    Or is that doable now?

    • I joined contact 2 months ago on "no fixes term" and got $150 credit. After the first bill I moved my broadband to contact with a referral and got $100 credit. 1 week later I moved to their 3 hours free power plan using "200off" and got this credit also so can be done

      • 200off code doesn't work on free power plan anymore. They have fixed it. You and some others got lucky.

  • Variable electricity prices could start dropping in the future but the low user fixed charge will likely disappear.

Is it still a good idea to join the Contact free power plan seeing as you have to fix the power prices over the next year and they could fall rather than increase?

Edit: I guess it would be good to fix the Contact low user rates for the next year if you're a low user to avoid the first lot of increases. High user, maybe not so good to fix.

  • I have been Flick and I like small retailers and such because they disrupted the power retailer landscape in here. The reason why Contact and Genesis are all giving you those joining credits is to squeeze these small retailers out of the market. Don't forget, before these small retailers entered Contact and co were increasing power prices year after year and laughing all the way to the bank.

  • Missed out on the multiple discount code trick with Contact a couple weeks ago but just bit the bullet and signed up to their 3 hour free power plan using one of the Cheapies referral links.

I'm currently with Mercury and comparing prices, even with the 12% discount I currently get for prompt payment / DD, it's more expensive than contact and that's before the 3 hours of free power is factored in. Running heat pumps alone in summer and winter before bed make it it a winner.

  • I've switched from Mercury to Contact too, and couldn't be happier. Used to pay 26.3c per kWh under Mercury (back in Auckland), and now am paying 21.3c per kWh under Contact in ChCh. Life is beautiful.
