I wouldn't feed my dog vegan food even if they paid me

    • +1

      Ditto with my cat.

A freebie is a freebie though, mix it in with their other food so they don't miss out on all the good meatiness if you must

      • Yup, I'm sure their intention is to sell it as a replacement to regular meat food after your sample.

I'm sorry but this is just wrong.

I say this as someone who has worked in cat rescue for a number of years. I also have alot of respect for anyone who chooses to be vegan. I even agree for people its probabily a healthier choice.

    However..
Cats and dogs are obligate carnivores and can not choose. They cannot be fed a plant based diet.

I'm actually a bit shocked this is allowed to be sold.

Would strongly reccomend you speak to a vet before considering transitioning your pet onto a food like this.

There are plenty of prominent vegans in the cat and dog world who will give the same message. Hannah Shaw and Jackson Galaxy are two that come to mind.

    • +7

Just to correct you that cats are obligated carnivores, whereas dogs are omnivores and opportunists like human.

I agree that pets should not have our dietary lifestyle forced upon them and if you want a vegan pet get a rabbit, however, this is cheapies and the person has shared a deal they have come across and doesn’t really need everyone’s opinion on the matter.

Apologies you are right re dogs. Although they have much shorter intestines which means they will find it much more difficult to digest plant based protiens. I still would be reluctant to try anything like this with out vet advise.

WhIle I can understand why this was posted the reason I have down voted (first time ever btw) is because as a company they are selling products that can be harmful to animals.

I feel this point needs to be made as someone could get this food and trasition there dog or cat to this wait which is the ultimate aim of this promotion.

I don't think anyone should take my word for it but a little research will show how dangerous this can be, especually for cats.

N then they talk about leaving the world in its natural state. Utter crap.

  • +6

I got some and will just mix it in with their tux (and soon to be). https://1-day.co.nz/products/purina-puppy-chow-4kg?sevid=186…. It won't hurt them. It just bulks up their tin. Is that not a ChoiceCheapie?

  • +2

Whilst its a great ChoiceCheapie which is the aim of this site, it really shouldn't be front-page. The animals that this food is being targeted towards aren't vegan animals.

IF they had rabbit food, I'd be all over it though

When my guinea pig was still in my life one of my dogs loved to eat his food, I have 8 finches and when I clean their cage she laps up all the leftover seed before wild birds get to it. eg sparrows.

      • +4

Some dogs literally eat poop though

Just because they like it doesn't necessarily mean they should eat it 😄

        • +3

Dogs eat poop especially cat ones because they lack the Nutrience in their food so they go looking for it else where.

  • Nothing wrong with dogs and cats eating vegetarian food if it's part of a diet not their entire diet. Pigs for instance are not vegetarians and just like dogs can have a variety of meat and vegetables. The anti-meat woke brigade would love this pet food to add to the argument that even their pets can be vegetarian.

Is this safe for human consumption?

    • +1

      I hope so

    • Try it and let us know in 5 days :) or not.

I hope so, my nan is getting sick of the 144 tins of the same flavour tuna cat food I bought her for Christmas

Grandparents can be so fussy sometimes. Tell her if she stops she will lose her shiny coat and healthy skin.

Funnily enough one maker of vegan and also a maker of alternative protein (cricket) pet foods have tried their food https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20200304-can-you-feed-cat…

Note that at the time of the BBC article anyway, neither one was making cat food, only dog food.

i'm all for vegans and pet owners- but it's a different story when they choose to enslave a pet, and then force their diet on it.

  • You shouldn't own a cat if you think they can eat vegan food

  • Commenting to downvote as vegan cat food is a terrible idea.

    • It's a great idea if you don't like cats.

  • If you want smaller pets, then a vegan diet is the way to go, lol….

    https://www.nzherald.co.nz/lifestyle/new-study-looks-at-the-…

  • Thanks for sharing the freebies. However, I don't support animal being forced as vegan unless they're herbivore.

The outcome data shows dogs and cats can be healthy on a well planned formulated diet without animal products, no one cares about knee jerk reactions.

A vegan has the ethical position that a diet containing animal products is unjustified and "force" it on their baby/children as they "force" any diet on their baby/children, that cannot reason. Why is it wrong to "force" it on a dog if it's okay to "force" it on a child? If you don't agree it's okay to force a child a vegan diet (before they can reason), then obviously you cannot say why it's wrong to "force" it on a dog.

    • "The outcome data shows dogs and cats can be healthy on a well planned formulated diet without animal products"

I would be very interested in seeing what study has published this in reference to cats.

Or if any vegan cat food has been recommended by any scientific or vet groups.

They have now edited there free samples to say $5 shipping applies. i checked my sample order and now says "On Hold" so i dont expect to receive any anytime soon or any at all, I was just gonna mix it into our cat food at home to see if they like it.
