Trademe Items That Probably Wont Sell

Found this absolute steal, $45,000 for a sim card (0277833678) which you immediately recognized as spelling 027 QUEEN ST and now understand the reason for price tag.
Potentially a untapped market out there, going to browse through my latest collection of sims for a potential nest egg.

  • You don't need to buy a specific SIM, most telcos will let you do this over the phone for free or a low cost if you get a rep that understands what you want(a number swap rather than a SIM swap).

Skinny let you do it online iirc, the others you need to call them(iirc sometimes Spark online chat reps will do it).

  • I listed a kfc spoon for $999,999 due to trademe giving me $5 credit but I had to list something to keep it.
    No watches, no bidders unfortunately

      Hi Foodie,

I'm surprised they didn't pull the listing, and contact you.

If I ever found something wrong with one of my listings, and I could not immediately fix it (say, and ambiguous description that could be one of two models with different specs), I used to immediately change the reserve to $9,999 while I was working out what I needed to add or change.

I figured that, if someone bought it for that price, and insisted on paying, I would happily find one that met the description and send it to them.

Sometime last year or so, I did that, and got an email (from a real TradeMe employee, with their name!) saying that the listing had been suspended as it did not look 'right' (can't recall the exact wording).

I emailed them back to say that what I had done and why, and provided the correct description, and they re-instated the listing.

It never impacted any of my other listings.

      Maybe it was just me!

      Alan.

I'm surprised as well as it would have stuck out like a sore thumb!

I've also used kfc spoon to arrange cheaper courier pickup for parcels by selling a kfc spoon to my brother for 50c. He buys kfc spoon, I send him 15 books in a box.

Could be the new currency? Kfc spoon to the moon!

        • I'm probably missing something obvious, but how does it make courier cheaper?

@mattk1: Special rates used to be applied to trademe courier parcels.
Over time these have been rates have increased, I haven't done it for a while.
It also meant an easy to arrange pickup service with the only need to write out a serial number in vivid, no need to print anything off.

          • @mattk1: Sorry, I should say the kfc spoon doesn't make it cheaper. But arranging courier through trademe vs post shop was cheaper.
Used kfc spoon just to make it easy for my brother to find.

        • Actually been curious about this - how closely do TM, the courier drivers or courier depot monitor the size packaging and weight selected for a TM auction versus the final boxed or bagged product physically being shipped (when using the TM bookacourier service).

@L3tstaxth1s: The new parcel scanners at courier post sortation centres will be able to measure parcels. So the technology is improving.

Currently it would have to be not noticeable when picked up. eg. 100g vs 6.5kg would probably get flagged.
You could probably get away with smaller differences now, but in the future that might change.

    • A KFC plastic bag (now banned) is worth a lot more than your spoon, lol.

      • I reckon, but when they ban the spoon I'll be able to retire!

        • That is true. They will be rolling out wooden spoons in near future.

          • @The Hound: Mcdonalds bamboo ones are gross. At least burgerfuel use a bio degradable plasticy feel kind of spoon
