Home Page - Missing Deals

Hi Guys,

Has there been a change to how the home page works?

It seems I am starting to miss deals that are posted. Previously, the home page was a straight feed of all the new deals etc, but now it seems to be excluding some for no apparent reason (I can see them listed on the right under 'new deals').

Maybe its just me?

Alan.

  • I always look on the 'live' page and just filter it by deals/comments.

  • Are you on phone or desktop and what is the page url you use. Also can you give an example of a deal that was on the right but not in the main feed.

If I go cheapies.nz, my Epic Games post and the PS5 post are missing. If I go cheapies.nz/deals (what I typically use), I see both.

  • FireFox on Win10 - no change there, and I used to see everything using FireFox on Ubuntu 18.04LTS too.

    URL = https://www.cheapies.nz/

Right now (20210319 - 0817) the main feed does not show this deal:

    https://www.cheapies.nz/node/26775

which is showing on the right under 'new deals'. The weekly Epic deals have always previously shown up in the main listing on the home page.

Is that a change? I'm pretty sure it is, but maybe age has finally taken its toll!?

    Alan.

    • The Choice Cheapies front page actually has 2 different sets of algorithms that you can pick from. If you look on the right hand side of the page you will see a three-dot menu. Click the "List" (Old) to revert back to the original front page algorithm

The current algorithm being used is more customisable and allows the user to set different weights to categories of deals.
If you click Personalise on that three dot menu, you'll be taken to this page:
      https://www.cheapies.nz/user/4295/edit/deals#fpn

      • Is that a change? If so, it seems quite counter-productive to filter out deals without warning users?

I had a look at the menu, but it does not give any hint as to what the settings do?

I see there is now a notice, but clicking on that takes you to OzBargain, and even then, the page it takes you to still doesn't explain what 'Old' does (unless I am missing something).

Is there a way to just show all deals that get posted without 'filters' getting in your way?

        Thanks,

        Alan.

List old is exactly how it's been for years, with votes 4 or higher shown in chronological order.

          • @neil: Okay, but isn't that different from the old home page?

I used to see deals with less than four votes, including deals that had only just been posted, and therefore had no votes?

Am I missing something obvious here? If so, apologies!

            Alan.

            • @Alan6984: New Deals - All deals posted by default. No change. - https://www.cheapies.nz/deals
Front Page - Deals that reach 4 or more votes is how it's been for several years. That is list (old). https://www.cheapies.nz/

              • @neil: Got it - Thanks Neil!

                • @Alan6984: Yeah, the tab to the right on the front page is 'new deals' so it also shows all deals by default I believe, but the main part of the front page has required 4 votes for a while. About the Epic thing, this week's deal seems to have been slow for some. I saw it last evening and it was still only 3 votes. (Didn't vote myself at the time as the browser I was using wasn't logged in.) You can see from https://www.cheapies.nz/node/26775/votes that the fourth vote happened at 17:29 yesterday. Your initial post commenting on this was at 08:19 on the 19/yesterday so it was actually only 2 votes at the time. Maybe one reason for the confusion is you've always only seen it after it hit 4 votes? In the past it was sometimes only posted in the morning so I don't think it always hit 4 by 8:19 although I think it often hit it by the evening, I suspect often by the late morning.

@Wakrak: Is that all deals with no filtering?

If so, then I guess that works, except it doesn't divide them by days, which was a nice feature to make it quick and easy to scan for things you hadn't seen.

            Thanks,

            Alan.

@Alan6984: I'm gonna use this one from here on.

              Thanks Wakrak!

Just for clarity, the front page was the only place that divided deals by dates. So if you switch back to frontpage old then it will be like before.
