Z App Sharetank - Get The Cheapest Fuel within 30km and Save up to 1000 Litres

130

The Z App just launched a new feature called Sharetank which I think is worth mentioning here. Basically it's like pre-pay fuel.

  • "We scan every Z service station within 30kms of your location to bring you our lowest pump price."
Because Sharetank is always open, you can fill it when you like to use when you need. No need to hold out until your tank hits empty or race around town hunting for a fuel deal.

  • "Buy when you see a price you like and we'll save your litres in a virtual tank you can access whenever you want."
e.g.: If today is Gull's discount day, then Z is very likely to do price match which means you can lock in cheaper fuel to use in the future.

  • Virtual tank: Add up to 1,000 litres at a time with any or all of these fuels: Z91 Unleaded, ZX95 Premium Unleaded, Z Diesel.

  • Share everywhere, use anywhere:
Fill your Sharetank in Tauranga. Share it with Gran in Timaru. Add pre-paid litres in Cambridge. Fill up in Christchurch.
You can invite and share your tank with up to 5 others. They'll all enjoy access.

I just checked mine and today's lowest Z 91 price in Auckland is $2.169 at Z Massey North.
With Flybuys 6c off you'll be paying actually $2.109/L.
Sharetank purchases cannot be used in conjunction with any other discounts, including Pumped discounts and fuel vouchers.

Sounds like a great way to skirt the Auckland fuel tax if you ever leave Auckland. I find the lowest fuel prices tend to be around Tauranga/Rotorua. Swing by, grab a few hundred litres and work through them in Auckland.

    • +1

It doesn't skirt it, it'll still add the tax.

      • +1

Actually it does. I just chatted with them and here's the answer:

Hi there, no, you're covered! Z has already paid the tax as the fuel is delivered into the service station - this article might help.
        http://help.sharetank.co.nz/en/articles/3339706-do-fuel-taxe…

We've covered it with the Ministry of Transport - there's no skirting taxes. We've already paid them when we deliver fuel to the service station. So every litre we put into an Auckland service station, we pay the tax - before any customer comes and pumps it into their car.

        • I take that back then! The "within 30km" was the caveat where I thought you'd still be paying taxed prices. But you can just get someone else in the country to lock it in and share it with you after all.

Interesting. So I can get my sister to purchase fuel for her sharetank in Tauranga and I can fill up in wellington saving me 30c a liter.

  • +2

Hmmm no luck setting a fake location (on Android) for purchasing at the cheapest station. The app detects when 'use mock location' is enabled. Probably quite easy to bypass on a rooted device.

    • Was my first thought to try this too!

  • According to this ghastly website, Tokoroa and Te Kuiti surprisingly have the cheapest diesel.
    https://www.pricewatch.co.nz/default.aspx

And Z is pretty consistent in its pricing and consistently more than everyone else. So it kind of looks like rather than you skirting the fuel tax across the rest of the country, they just applied it to everyone and are pocketing the 10c.

Maybe if you desperately need fuel from Auckland Airport it could be a good deal.

Prebuying can't be stack with Fly-buys discount unfortunately:

Sharetank purchases cannot be used in conjunction with any other discounts, including Pumped discounts and fuel vouchers (Z App FuelUp Supermarket Fuel Vouchers)

    • Thanks I've updated the post.

  • So what's the best price for 91 people are seeing within their 30km? Mine is 2.159 in Wellington.

    • +2

      $2.079 in Christchurch for 91

    • 2.099 Z Seaview then 2.159 Z Trentham (also closest to me, 700m) but the Caltex 2km away is 2.059 with 6c off. Just filling up on a 10c off day at Caltex is best for me. I can see this would be useful for some people, too much effort to share my cheaper Z with my family in Dunedin though.

  • $2.049 Nelson city.

  • $2.199 in Auckland City. This place is hell.

    • $2.169 where I am in Auckland

    • I used to live in Orakei Auckland. I've just looked at the price at the local Z… $2.269

      Jeeeez!!!

  • +2

Be really good for when going to Queenstown - that was about 35c more than chch

  • Anyone have the price of 95 around frankton, Hamilton. I'll be there on Monday. Could be worth buying up to use back in Auckland.

    • +1

$2.239 at the moment. I think you can enter an area into Gaspy and check prices. I do this before a long trip to decide fill up before or there.

    • +1

Best to buy in te rapa whoch is about 5 kms away from frankton. Today it was $2.059 for unleaded 91

  • So do you need to be physically near a cheap petrol station for this to be worth it? Wonder if GPS is the tracking and can be changed to where its cheapest somehow.

    • You can change the location virtually with some fake GPS Apps but you need an Android phone with root access I think.

Might be worth going to the Z on the corner of Pound RD and SH1 in Christchurch. You have Mobil ( usually the cheapest in Christchurch) , NPD and Allied in the vicinity.

    I'm from Rotorua. Hi everyone.

  • Just to clarify.. you actually have to pay for X amount of litres fuel at the time of locking that price in?

    • +2

Yes you are prepaying for x amount of litres of fuel at $x. Great if fuel prices rises next week, but if the price drops? Plus, you can't use your Flybuys discount, so you've lost 6-10 cents discount instantly.

A recent news article suggested that these fuel loyalty schemes are confusing consumers. With this later offer, they are spot on ;-)

    https://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&…

    • +1

They should just lower the price by 6c then! Earning cents off at other retailers is a good scheme and it's great the flybuys and airpoints cards are treated the same at Z (and Caltex) now.

  • The idea is interesting but I would avoid it since it is only a trial AND they can basically stop doing it rendering your accumulated "fuel credit" useless in the end.

    • -1

I've been using it since it was introduced and find it good. I'm sure they'd give enough notice period for you to use the rest of your fuel.

I've save quite a lot as in Wellington the price is around $2 and I bought 450L when I was in Napier when the price was around $1.65.

I also got a free 15L. I think this bonus is only for early users though.
