Thinking about switching credit cards

Hi Everyone,

Any guidance appreciated.

I have been looking around and not sure what would be best.

I do use fly buys, or perhaps the warehouse may be an option as that offers an additional 5% discount on purchases (https://www.warehousemoney.co.nz/cards/warehouse-money-visa-…).

I put everything on credit but pay off before its due, not sure how much that I spend in a year but I always manage to make enough from cashback rewards to pay the annual fee cost of the card itself plus pocket some change. Just wondered if there are any other/better options.

Currently have an ANZ cash back rewards visa (https://www.anz.co.nz/personal/credit-cards/cashback-visa/)

Have been looking at BNZ advantage visa premium (https://www.bnz.co.nz/personal-banking/credit-cards/bnz-card…) as it rewards with flybuys plus it has something called extended warranty/insurances etc. They have a deal currently.

What are your thoughts about flybuys rewards? Just a gimmick or worthwhile? there are many things I want to get from the flybuys catalogue but I dont have enough points which is why I am looking at alternative credit cards.

Look forward to any insight you are able to share.

Thanks in advance.

  • The ASB Bank Visa True Rewards system means you earn points by using your credit card at partner retailers. You can then use those points to either buy stuff from the True Rewards website OR use the separate True Rewards debit card to pay / part-pay for anything in-store at the participating retailers. The only drawbacks are that the partner retailers are limited and they started charging an annual fee for the True Rewards scheme (on top of the credit card annual fee) a little while back.

    • It looks like they no longer charge a True Rewards fee if you get a new card, only existing Mastercards have to pay - https://www.asb.co.nz/help/True-rewards-account-fee.html

      • Ah, okay. Thanks. I didn't notice I didn't pay a fee recently.

Originally it was free, then there was a fee, now there isn't … wish they'd make up their minds.

  • Do airpoints interest you? Can buy stuff from their store as we as use for flights. Kiwibank are offering their platinum card now with either 2 years fee waiver (150 py) or 300 airpoints, so that's $300 to spend on stuff. Not sure what your current fee is though, probably much lower.

  • The Kiwibank option is good, we have used it for the last 7 years. They tightened up the lounge pass offer (not relevant if you don't fly) but the airpoints dollars are pretty generous ( I think 1 dollar return per 70 spent). You can sign up, get the benefit then cancel as previously mentioned, but it's a good card.
