  • Is this deal still active?

  • I personally use Spotify free. If you Google a bit, you can find hostfile entries that you can use to block Spotify ads. I get to listen to songs as if I'm using Spotify premium, no ads whatsoever. Song quality is still good at the lower bitrate that free users get, I can't really tell the difference anyway. You can also achieve the same thing on Android, just get a patched Spotify apk and you're good to go. Saves you some monthly costs. There's very little reason to go Premium.

Also, have a look up Spytify on Github.

That's a good little hack, and I know ChoiceCheapies is all about finding a good deal, but it's a bit stingy, isn't it? Especially when you get purchase a family plan for up to 6 people "family members", making it $3.75 a month - plus I think you can do that India-VPN thing to make it even cheaper?

Idk man, I just feel like you should at least pay something to access those millions of songs and podcasts, don't you reckon?

      • I see some songs are being blocked now for free members, so there's that.

        • Which songs did they block? I'd like to verify this. Pretty sure the only limitations/restrictions for free members is the lower bitrate of the songs, as well as ads. Wouldn't make sense to block songs.

Also, depends what version of Spotify you're using, you won't encounter blocked songs.

          • @NovaAlpha: ah my apologies looks like they have stopped doing it, for my music at least.

Depends on perspective I guess. I'm not forcing people to follow my recommendations, to each their own. I personally have a huge mortgage and other expenses to worry about. The more I can save, the better.

Plus, my family aren't tech savvy, so they don't really use Spotify or the likes. Most of my friends don't really care about Spotify premium, or that they are already sharing the family plan with someone else already. So this doesn't benefit me.

If it makes you feel better, my girlfriend at the time was with Spark and they had this deal back then that gives you Spotify premium for free, as long as you're on a particular plan (can't remember which one). So technically, we were paying for Spotify Premium while she was on that plan. Then Spark stopped partnering with Spotify and so that plan disappeared (or something like that).

I prefer to download my songs and keep it offline, just as most people do back in the days. A lot of people still download movies and maintain their own Plex server (or whatever media server / solution). So there are other reasons to consider. Spotify Premium can download music offline, but you're limited to using Spotify to play the downloaded cache and it's just annoying.

BTW, some countries like the UK offer extra payment methods for Spotify. One of the payment methods involves using your mobile number to pay, kinda like what you have on Google Play nowadays. You could simply find a free UK number for receiving SMS online and use it. I know tons of people who did this and got Premium for life, for free. Those are the real cheap people.

For those people who use uBlock or Adblock Plus, which is most people that I know of, then it's no different to using a hostfile entry to block ads. It just so happens that you could actually block Spotify ads with hostfile entries.

    • If I want to stream Spotify via Amazon Alexa on my Ultimate Ears 'Blast' Wireless speaker (which is a great speaker by the way) I can only do so when using Spotify Premium - very frustrating but these free trials make that possible, just need to keep creating new accounts as the offer becomes available.

      • How do you keep creating new accounts? Spotify requires a new payment method for each new account, and prepaid Visa cards like Prezzie cards no longer work.

        • There was very easy ways online that can virtualise your visa card.

          • @lNomNoml: I know a few, but interested to know which ones you were referring to?

        • I haven't tried the virtual cards yet. Between myself and my partner we have nearly 30 different debit/credit cards (we essentially get 2 per account each since we add each other as additional card holders), 3 months a pop and if I were to somehow run through them all they are often replaced every few years which mean new card numbers anyhow - day to day I only really use a single credit card and rarely use debit cards (only when cc's are not accepted).. but having them all means I can do this.
