yeah man totally agree, there are heaps of specialized shops around that do rock bottom prices there, camera shops etc but the big retailers are hit and miss. I just like the variety there.. but I find even using kakaku only marginally helpful.
I travel to Japan a bit and asked my work colleagues about this. Essentially due to the competition laws there you rarely get 'bargains' or big differences in prices between shops (except in tourist areas, where everything is marked up).
This is why you will find electronics made in Japan that are cheaper in NZ than in Japan itself.
