  • My amazing mum loves to cook - and loves food - but also has everything.. so Christmas, Birthdays and Mothers Day is a mission!
Fortunately, we are lucky to have the Great NZ Food Show in Hamilton - so will take her along to that and participate in one of their amazing cooking classes.
Happy Mum. We do something fun. And get to eat our great dish! :D
    Happy Mothers Day everyone :)

  • Where do I begin! Recently I promoted my Mum to Nana which has made me realise so much! It's made me realise just how much Mum did for us kids. The selfless love, care, time and attention she gave us was incredible. If I can be half the Mum she was to us I'll be doing a great job. This year I got her a special Marlee and Jo grandparents book that she can fill up with memories for my little boy about how her and dad met and all those important details. I always want my son to know just how loved he is by them and all the special things about them. Love you Mum xx

  • I'm also a new Dad. Seeing my mum play with my daughter shows me exactly how she would've treated me when I was a baby. It's made me appreciate her so much more than I already do. She always puts the family first over her own needs/wants. So I always make sure I give her the time that she has unselfishly given to me and my siblings. I always go over for Sunday family dinners, or at least visit in the weekends. Cos that's what she values the most - time spent with family.

She doesn't really buy into the commercialism of Mother's Day, but me and my bro/sis will take her out to a nice restaurant for dinner despite her telling us not to make a fuss. I always try to get her something practical and useful. She keeps running out of space on her iPhone 5 16GB and always has to delete photos (filling up fast cos of many many granddaughter photos), so methinks it's time for me to buy her an iPhone 7 128GB.

  • Oh, I love that we can enter multiple times, because it gives me multiple oppertunities to ramble about my mum instead of having to try and pick a particular moment and worry if it's too silly/strange/uniquely mum!

Because one thing I've given my mother for mother's day in the past were her two front teeth. She'd been self-conscious about them for years, and I saved for months to have them fixed and built up again properly. Nothing should ever make my mother hide her smile, and being able to give that back to her is the greatest gift I think I could have ever have given (not to mention receive in turn).

  • Disqualify me if you want as my memory came a few months after "Mothers Day":

My mum was never spent money on herself when I grew up; she sowed all our family clothes including hers, never went to hairdressers or wore makeup. She used to drive us around in an old 1985 Toyota Corolla most of the years when I was at school/uni and always pushed us hard to study so we would have a better quality of life than they did. My brother and I weren't great listeners sometimes as young boys (it was especially hard since dad worked 7 days a week to make ends meet), but I did end going to university and getting a degree in Engineering.

I bought a brand new Kia Rio in 2012 when I lived in Perth. I moved from Australia to NZ in 2014 with my wife and son, and leaving my mum and dad's place for the first time in my life.

We sold most of our possessions but when we left Perth but as we were headed to the Airport for NZ, I told mum, "Keep the car, its yours." :)

Moral of the story: Mum's don't get the credit they deserve; I am learning this as I see what my wife does for my son now & I can't imagine how hard it is as kids get older.

  • I have just recently moved out of parents house which made me realise how good my they were to me.
I have never gave my mum mother's day present, I always give her cash because that is what she want (I think she doesnt trust my sense of choosing a gift)
hopefully I can win this competition and buy something for her this year

  • As for my gift for my mum this year… I think sometimes when there is something that your mum wants or needs, it’s a little bit easier to come up with that gift and it’s something that you can work towards. It’s a bit harder those years when the intent of the gift isn’t what you yourself are willing or able to give, but something which captures who she is at her heart. This year is one of those ‘I’d love anything!’ years, and I’ve tried to capture her warmth, her sacrifice, her silliness, her love, her interests, and her humour in one slightly ridiculous gift: a hardcover photo book that tells of the adventures of her six rescue cats as they explore the world (or at least her backyard) for hidden treasures. It is a tale of friendship, betrayal, mistaking bits of bark for gold, and ultimately finding out that the greatest treasure is back home. One of the cats is even (temporarily) wearing a pirate hat. I'm just hoping it arrives in the post tommorrow!

  • Mum's a massage therapist - so she spends a lot of time giving other people massages and never really gets to enjoy the experience herself. Siblings and I have booked a massage in to coincide with a holiday she's taking. We've also got her a case of sparkling wine so she doesn't feel like she's missing out on the day itself. I'm out of the country this year, but we typically have dinner as well - think my sister will be there though!
