  • Interesting. I recall the same thing happening with texts, then ADSL, and then calls. Hopefully some competition will now bring the price of mobile data right down. Would love to replace our junk connection at home with some 4G. Got to wait and see how they deal with tethering first though.

  • Sparks doing it for $129.99, wonder how till vodafone catches on…

Sparks one includes both spotify premium and lightbox, which is easily worth an extra $10.

    Better link for this deal

  • How do they deal with hotspots? Can they tell?

    • Yes they can. But I'm curious whether pdanet is able to hide its function.

    • Probably disabled via sim card. Probably can be bypassed though

    • They will probably also monitor traffic types, checking for hits to Windows update servers etc.

      • Wonder how that'd work when traffic is being routed through a VPN.

I think they will simply be looking at volume and kicking anyone with "excessive" usage off, or maybe they have a 3 strike then off system. All 3 offerings so far are extremely unclear as to how it's managed. Just like the "Go Large" days, lack of thought and planning destroyed that idea for a while.

The other option, and one I've seen before, is to separate 3G and 4G limits. They could have, say, 20 - 50GB of 4G/month and then restrict to 3G after that is hit. Not sure if it's practical to implement that here or not though.

        • I'd say Spark will definitely slow you down after 22gb, even though they used the word "may"

        • @Jizah:

I've just tested with 2Degrees 1 day free trial. No slowing down at all. Whether that's just because its the free trial, or because they haven't got solid plans, I'm not sure. I'd say you are right about Spark though, can't imagine them allowing more than that, just wonder what they'll slow it down to.

        • @Shaw:

how much data did you get through?

        • @quote:

80GB, couple of Xbox games and not much else. No slow down or disconnection. Wonder if they are going to use the free trial to collect some data. Other possibility is that they could base the restrictions on the spare capacity of the connected cell tower, so it may be variable. Heaps of speculation, no clue really. On GZ someone mentioned that the pricing is going to change too, for prepaid anyway.
