Your Device Isn't Part of The Netflix Household for This Account - Have You Started Receiving This and What Do We Do?

Hey everyone - so we've been getting this a few times now and was wondering if you have come across this and how to get around this? Thanks!

  • This is part of Netflix clampdown on password sharing.
You should only get the prompt if you are not the main household (IP address of account holder).

I have Netflix via Turkey and my parents are an additional user of my account. This message appeared for them the first time last week.
You can choose the ‘I’m travelling’ option to get around it and it will send a code to the main account holders phone to allow it.
Too early to tell if I can continue this going forward.

    • Same here, turkey, parents received first message last week and chose I’m travelling option

    • Can vouch for the same thing. Turkey Netflix and brother was asked for this prompt last week

  • We don't have NetFlix, but I know someone else who does (in the sense of using someone else's account), and they got that same message a week or two ago, so I would guess this is going out to all 'users' that are in NZ (or maybe a wider geography).

I suspect, but have no means of testing, that if a user were to connect via, say, VPN to the account holders network (so that all connections to NetFlix come from the same IP), then you'd get away with it that way, but since it would likely be against the agreement the account holder 'shook hands on' with NetFlix, I'd say that was unethical at best.

  • Thanks everyone.

So to everyone with Turkey Netflix: Would you say it is safe to reserve the "travelling option" for the main household? Since Netflix might expect the main household to be in Turkey?

    • No. If you are the main account holder then the household should be under you.
You can't be travelling all the time - that's a pretty obvious red flag that you don't live at the main address. From what I understand you still need to log onto your account from the main household IP address every so often (not sure of frequency) and stream for a short amount of time.
I have read online of the travelling party being removed by Netflix and if they suspect your trying to cheat the system or even shutting down the main account.

I still need to research some more but I figure I would rather have the extra account removed if necessary than my main one (which I pay for).

      • I’m the main household and main account holder but does it matter that I’m subscribed to Netflix Turkey which can they expect me to be in Turkey instead of NZ?

That doesn’t matter. Being based in Turkey is more for billing purposes - the actual address you stream from (ie live at) is not important.

          From the Netflix help page

We use information such as IP addresses, device IDs, and account activity to determine whether a device signed into your account is part of your Netflix Household.

We do not collect GPS data to try to determine the precise physical location of your devices.

  • There is a way around this. Some people have 2 homes - think of people who have a main home and a bach. Netflix explains the process here:

    https://help.netflix.com/en/node/24853

Basically you need to watch Netflix via the app your phone at your main home (probably on the wifi), then take that same phone to the other house and watch it on your phone there too (again, probably on wifi). This should remove the block for other devices at that second home. Have heard you need to do this process every few months to keep the block from coming back.

    • It definitely needs to be on wifi when connected via phone.
If you use data then the IP address won’t change to indicate your second location.
Every 30 days I read somewhere.

      • Thanks, yeah makes sense about wifi, should have realised. 30 days, that's interesting.

Haven't done the process myself yet, but it works for a friend. If people in both households get the Netflix app, and get on each other's wifi to watch a few seconds whenever one is visiting the other, it seems quite manageable. A bit more useable than the 'I'm Travelling' option imo, which might hit a future snag.

        • If your router supports, run VPN server and let others use your VPN connection once a month to watch Netflix for sometime.

    • I haven't come across this problem yet, but if that is the case, then it maybe very easy to forget to do this, and then you get to the bach and have no access. It doesn't really stop people sharing their account either. Maybe they should just restrict the number of devices that can access the account at anyone time instead which is what Lightbox used to do.

Received the same message for an NZ account (have two houses where I spend time).

Kind of annoying as streaming services were initially marketed as "use anywhere" (>10 years ago).
Now that they dominate the market it's the gold ole bait and switch….
